Presenter Spotlight: Simone Hicks, Ph.D.

Meet Simone Hicks, Ph.D, who is joining us on the 2nd Annual Mental Health and Cultural Competence Symposium at Sea, conducing her workshop: Mental Health Ethics: Balancing Privacy and Duty of Care.

 

Who is Simone?

Simone is a dedicated higher education professional who leads with compassion, advocacy, and purpose. She currently chairs Augusta University’s Campus Assessment Response and Evaluation (CARE) Team, oversees the Jags Care initiative, serves as a conduct hearing officer, and manages essential student support programs including the Open Paws Food Pantry and Student Emergency Fund. Through these initiatives, Simone contributes to student wellness, safety, and belonging across campus.

 

What does Simone do?

Simone focuses on promoting holistic student development and crisis prevention. She works collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff to ensure students have access to the resources, guidance, and care they need to thrive. From leading case management efforts to coordinating emergency support, Simone’s work is rooted in empathy, accountability, and a passion for serving others.

 

How does Simone work?

Simone brings a thoughtful, student-centered approach to everything she does. She believes in the power of mentorship and service to guide her interactions and leadership style. Simone leads with a calm, grounded presence that fosters confidence and care.

 

Why mental health?

Simone’s passion for mental health began during her undergraduate studies at Troy University, where she majored in Rehabilitation Services. There, she discovered a love for helping people overcome challenges and achieve their goals. Working in environments like rehabilitation centers and case management offices, Simone realized that supporting others on their journey to wellness and independence was her true calling. Seeing individuals grow, build resilience, and reach their milestones continues to inspire her every day.

 

What drives Simone?

Service is at the heart of Simone’s mission. Her belief that “mentorship is not an option, but a necessity” reflects her commitment to lifting others up, just as mentors once did for her. For Simone, helping one student reach their potential is a powerful ripple that impacts entire communities.

 

Why does Simone’s session matter?

Simone’s presentation, Mental Health Ethics: Balancing Privacy and Duty of Care, addresses a critical issue in higher education and mental health practice. Drawing on her experience as an administrator and crisis response leader, she explores how professionals can uphold ethical and legal responsibilities while safeguarding the well-being of individuals and the broader community. The workshop employes the FERPA framework and NABITA best practices.

 

What are some fun facts about Simone?

  • Of all her roles, being an Auntie is her favorite!

  • She once won a car on The Price is Right!

  • Loves shopping and any activity that promotes relaxation.

  • Has been on other cruises, but this will be her first visit to the Grand Cayman Islands!

  • Simone believes that every experience, from work to travel, should be a mix of learning, growth, and fun.
