Presenter Spotlight: Dawn Whiteside, MEd, LPC

Meet Dawn Whiteside, MEd, LPC, who is conducting the Roots and Resonance: A Journey Through the History of Play Therapy workshop aboard our inaugural Play Therapy Symposium at Sea!

Who is Dawn?

Dawn Smith Whiteside is a Mental Health Specialist, Licensed Professional Counselor, Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) Practitioner, and School Counseling Student in her final semester at the University of Dayton. She is deeply rooted in connection, growth, and wellness, and brings warmth, reflection, and authenticity into every space she enters.

What does Dawn do?

By day (and many evenings), Dawn serves as a Mental Health Specialist at Circleville City Schools, where she supports students, families, and staff in meaningful and compassionate ways. Alongside her school-based work, she is completing her training as a school counselor and practicing as an LPC, offering services grounded in care, balance, and whole-person wellness.

How does Dawn work?

Dawn approaches her work through a holistic lens, believing true healing happens when mind, body, and spirit are all nurtured. She values presence, reflection, and relationship-building, and strives to create spaces where people feel seen, supported, and empowered to grow.

Why play therapy?

Play therapy found Dawn through her deep desire to connect more fully with people of all ages and explore healing beyond words. She views play as a universal language that allows stories to unfold, emotions to surface, and healing to begin naturally. Through play, Dawn helps clients express what may feel too big, complex, or confusing to put into words.

What drives Dawn?

Dawn is driven by wellness in its fullest sense. She is passionate about supporting balance, resilience, and long-term well-being for children, families, and fellow professionals. At the heart of her work is a belief that small, consistent moments of care can create lasting change.

Why does Dawn's session matter?

The history of play therapy is the foundation of the field an of who we are as clinicians. Dawn’s session invites participants to explore the pioneers who shaped play therapy while also reflecting on their own personal and professional stories. Understanding where we come from helps clarify where we are going and deepens our connection to the work we do.
